From your own rhythm to algorithm needs personal guidance
Autonomous growing has become increasingly indispensable for greenhouse horticulture. Algorithms and AI control the daily processes. But how do you learn to work with algorithms, and what’s your role as a grower? Laurens van der Spek, Chief Operations Officer, and Geert van der Wel, Autonomous Greenhouse Manager of Blue Radix, offer their answers. Here they discuss the changing role of the grower, and how artificial intelligence delivers the most value when combined smartly with personal support.
Onder Glas | Grower sets goal, model calculates required crop control and setpoints
In the January edition of the Dutch Onder Glas magazine an article on the completion of the TKI project ‘the road to digital green fingers’. Two seasons of research took place with an illuminated tomato crop (large trusses) in which first a sensor network was developed and eventually the climate was controlled with smart algorithms. Onder Glas | Crop Manager Jack ‘t Hoen: ‘I couldn’t have done it better myself’
In the newsletter and website of Dutch media ‘Onder Glas’, Crop Manager Jack ‘t Hoen of Bosch growers was interviewed about autonomous growing with Crop Controller. Since last summer, Bosch Growers in Bleiswijk, the Netherlands, are controlling their cultivation in one department by autonomous growing software during the day. Crop Manager Jack ‘t Hoen tells that the algorithms work so well that today the switch was made to fully autonomous control 24/7. He has every confidence in it. “The results are continuously on the line that was set out. I couldn’t have done better myself.”

Blue Radix was a project leader of the TKI project ‘The road to digital green fingers’ over the past two years. The project has developed an integrated measurement system for monitoring crop responses in real time, aiming to support growers’ green fingers with smart, digital crop measurements. Now the TKI project has been completed, producing a host of insights into which sensors add value to autonomous growing. Blue Radix wins Hillenraad TECH50 award in the Data Science and AI category
On Thursday October 28th, the TECH50 Event was organized by Hillenraad Partners. During this event the most leading technology companies in the Dutch greenhouse industry were awarded. This year’s theme was the contribution towards autonomous growing. From 292 horticulture-tech companies, Blue Radix was selected by an expert jury, as the winner in the category Data Science & AI!
Blue Radix’ Crop Controller winner Greenhouse Technology Award
On October 4th the winners of the Greenhouse Technology Awards were announced in the show guide of the Canadian Greenhouse Conference (CGC). Crop Controller by Blue Radix was announced winner in the international category.
